What are the ingredients for making these strawberries?
- Strawberries - of course, we want to use firm strawberries, but also want to make sure they are room temperature strawberries. Read below for reasons why we want the strawberries firm and room temperature.
- Melting Chocolate - I like using white chocolate and milk (or even dark!) chocolate to dip and also add a fun drizzle to the tops once they harden.
- Sprinkles - clear or white sprinkles are fun for added texture and decor, but not necessary!
See the recipe card below for more information regarding specific quantities and notes!
Swaps and Substitutions
This recipe lends itself to some alterations, however I have not tried this with a plant-based melting chocolate before.
- Chocolate - as I mentioned, I have not tested with any other chocolate other than Guittard, Hershey, and Merckens bought off of amazon. I actually prefer the Merckens brand for melting chocolate.
- Strawberries - obviously this recipe is written to use strawberries, but you can easily swap these out for pretzels, orange slices, apple slices, pineapple, and other fruit or snacks you want to dip.
- Sprinkles - you do not need sprinkles as I mentioned before, but if you want to add some crunch outside the dipped strawberry.
How do I make this chocolate strawberries recipe?
Melt the Chocolate
You have two options to melt the chocolate: either in a double boiler, or in the microwave.
If you choose the double boiler, I highly recommend using a heat-safe glass bowl. Add the bowl over a small pot of boiling water. Pour the chocolate into the glass bowl and stir while the chocolate melts. Turn the heat low and keep over the water, or remove. For the microwave, be sure to use a microwave safe bowl, then add the chocolate to the bowl.
If your microwave has a "melt" button, use that setting for 5-6 minutes. otherwise, melt the chocolate in the microwave for 3 minutes at power level 6. Stir, then set the microwave again for another 3 minutes at the same power level. Continue this until all of the chocolate is melted.
Dipping the Berries
Prior to dipping, be sure to rinse the strawberries, patting them with a paper towel to dry.
Using a fork, a skewer, or even small tongs, hold the strawberry and dip directly into the chocolate, ¾ of the way through as to leave some of the berry flesh exposed at the ton near the green leaves.
Lay on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or wax paper. Repeat this for all the strawberries, and any other food you want dipped. Place in the fridge in order to let the chocolate firm up.
Decorate!
If you want to get fancy, add a little white chocolate drizzle (or milk chocolate) to the tops of the strawberries, some sprinkles, or crushed nuts.
Tips for Making the PERFECT Strawberry
- For best results, work quickly! You want super smooth melted chocolate when dipping, and the chocolate will become firm if left sitting for long periods of time. From my experience, within 10 minutes the chocolate will start to harden.
- Use dry strawberries, they should not be wet or be pierced in any way. The chocolate will run off and not stick.
- Speaking of strawberries, remember to have them room temperature. The colder they are, the harder it is for the chocolate to stick. Sometimes the chocolate falls right off once hardened if the berries are too cold.
Ways to serve and pair this recipe
- Serve these as part of a dessert bar with a tiramisu, my kitchen sink cookie skillet, or decadent chewy oreo cookie bars for a Galentine's Day brunch or dinner.
- Serve after making your date a delicious chicken francese, classic tuscan chicken, or a take on a Marry Me pasta with my creamy chicken tortellini.
- Pair with my espresso martini cocktail!
Frequently Asked Questions
What type of chocolate should I use? Chips or something else?
Great question! I do not recommend using chocolate chips, as they are actually meant to hold their shape and NOT melt!! I highly suggest finding a high quality chocolate wafer, or a baking chocolate bar. Even better if the chocolate has a vegetable or coconut oil already in it so that it aids with the shine and the texture of the chocolate. You can use any flavor of chocolate from semisweet chocolate wafers to milk chocolate to dark chocolate. I also love using white chocolate here.
What can I do with the leftover chocolate?
If you have excess chocolate to use up, the easiest way to do this is to just go dip happy and find all the foods you want to dip into the chocolate. From pretzels to sour patch, apples to oranges, the limit does not exist (maybe stick to just food, no one wants to eat chocolate dipped paper or it could be confused with something else...)
How do I store leftovers?
Any leftover chocolate-dipped strawberries can go directly into an airtight container and placed in the fridge for up to 3 days. After three days, the strawberries will begin to soften and become a little mushy.
My chocolate became firm really quick! What do I do?
Don't panic, that's step one. In order to prevent the chocolate getting firm fast, you do need to work a little quickly. If the chocolate does firm up quickly, add the chocolate back to the microwave and melt for 2 minutes, then stir. The chocolate should become smooth again.
