When pears are in a recipe, you know it's going to be good. I love baking with apples, or pumpkin, or even using butternut squash in recipes, but there's something just so sweet and decadent about incorporating pears into dishes, especially when they're coated in cinnamon, and topped with a buttery, crumbly topping.
I'm talking about this delicious and easy cinnamon pear crumble recipe, and you must add it to the top of your baking list this week!
Crumbles are essentially a crisp, but without the oats in it. I love oats, I love oatmeal, but I don't typically prefer them in my crumbles or cobblers. This pear version is great all year round, especially when they're in peak season: the fall.
Crumbles like my peach crumble, or making easy recipes like my pear and brown sugar french toast bake are great ways to incorporate fruit like pears.

Why you'll love this crumble
- Very minimal ingredients with a whole lot of flavor.
- Easy to assemble the night before and bake the next day.
- If you don't like pears you can simply use other types!
What are the ingredients for this pear crumble recipe?
- Pears: the reason I developed this recipe, it's all about the pears.
- Cornstarch or arrowroot: both of these are equally available at grocery stores, and they are used to thicken the pears as they bake.
To make the crumble topping, you'll need:
- Flour - I actually used gluten free flour from Primal Palate for this, but regular all purpose flour works well too.
- Sugar - the sugar combines with the melted butter and the flour to make a "crumble"
- Cinnamon - a little warmth and flavor added to the top.
- Butter - the melted butter is what brings all of the dry ingredients together.
See the recipe card below for specific information regarding quantities.
Swaps and Substitutions
If you're looking to make some modifications and swaps for this recipe, here's what I recommend:
- Pears: Feel free to swap out for apples, plums, peaches, or even cranberries or any other fruit.
- Sugar: For the crumble, you can use coconut sugar if you want to replace the cane and light brown sugar
- Butter: You'll want to find a vegan butter that melts well if you don't eat dairy. While I don't typically use vegan butter, I've heard great things about Miyokos butter.
How do I make this recipe?
For the crumble: Combine the flour, sugars, and cinnamon in a bowl, then set aside. In a small separate bowl, melt the butter, then pour into the flour and sugar mixture. Mix together using a spatula until the flour and sugar are fully incorporated with the butter. The crumble should look like large pieces and stick together.
For the assembly: Slice three pears into ¼" pieces and add to an oven-safe baking dish. Sprinkle a dusting of cinnamon and arrowroot or cornstarch onto the pears and toss to combine.
Step 1: Sprinkle a generous helping of the crumble on top of the pears, spreading evenly to coat.
Step 2: Bake the crumble at a 350º oven for 20 minutes. Let cool for 5-10 minutes before serving.
Ways to serve this crumble recipe
This is typically served as a dessert, but, if you want to serve this in a special way, here's what I suggest:
- Serve as a light bite for a brunch
- Serve as a breakfast with whipped cream
- Top with ice cream
- Top with Nutella or a drizzle of chocolate
- Add crumbled nuts like pecans or almonds to the top for added crunch.
Storage and Freezer Information
To Store: Wrap the entire baking dish with the pear crumble in it in plastic wrap and set in the fridge for up to 48 hours. I would also recommend scooping and storing in an airtight container for 48-72 hours.
To Freeze: You can wrap a pre-baked or unbaked crumble in the fridge for up to 3-4 months when wrapped well.
